01 Dec 09 Do You Have The Qualifications Necessary To Become A Virtual Assistant?

Have you considered becoming a virtual assistant yet are not sure if you have the qualifications you need to succeed.

Starting a virtual assistant business is not very difficult or expensive in contrast to many other businesses, but there are some qualifications you need to have to be successful.

Most virtual assistants have at least five years of high level administrative experience. These are not receptionists or data entry clerks, but high level administrative or executive assistants.

Why is a high level of experience necessary?

Virtual assistants need to have experience with a wide variety of software programs, excellent writing and editing skills, good grammar and an understanding of business procedures. Many VAs also have expertise in Internet, web design, marketing, graphics and bookkeeping. This knowledge and experience allows a VA to become a partner with their client and truly assist them in running their business.

While you don’t have to have experience in all of these skill sets, keep in mind the more skills you have, the more services you can offer. A highly skilled VA will be an invaluable asset to their client’s business.

Most professionals who choose to become a virtual assistant have experience in some of the following:

Secretarial experience or executive assistants
Bookkeeping experience
Strong communication skills, including proofreading, writing, editing
Administrative background
Legal assistant or paralegal experience
Office management experience
Professional organizers
Concierge experience
Fantastic customer service skills Someone with organizational talent and attention to detail

Successful Virtual assistants possess a wide variety of skills and come from different backgrounds. Take some time and think about the services you would like to offer before you become a virtual assistant.

What will be your niche and target market?

You will know if you have the necessary skills once you have become clear on your business goals. If you don’t have every skill you need yet, you can always take advantage of the excellent training programs available. All careers and businesses require skills and training; therefore there is no reason to be discouraged if you do not have all of the skills you need in the beginning. If you need, prepare yourself and get training before you launch your home business.

There is no reason you cannot start your virtual assistant business immediately if you have the necessary skills and many years of experience. The virtual assistant industry is not regulated; therefore, there are no certifications or trainings required to become a VA. Just be sure you can deliver high quality work as your business reputation is extremely important.

The most important quality you need to become a virtual assistant is an entrepreneurial spirit. If you have a good foundation of essential skills and experience, everything else will take care of itself. The qualities you really need are self-discipline, organizational skills and a strong drive to succeed.
